The place has become known as the "village of widows". Health experts say it is a result of inhaling small dust particles from the rocks. Many of the sandstone mines operate on a small scale, so the sector is largely unorganised. That leaves millions of labourers with little to no education or protection vulnerable to silicosis. But as the only industry in the area, villagers have no choice but to work in these mines in order to feed their families.

It has mostly nothing to do with cost and mostly comes down to people not choosing to wear them due to them being very uncomfortable under the Indian climatic conditions. For example, most of the people who ride a motorcycle in India can easily afford a helmet, but you would hardly anybody wearing a helmet. It is because helmets are simply unbearable under the boiling Indian sun.

This was heartbreaking to watch. I watched my Father die from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (he was on oxygen therapy 24/7, the last year of his life, struggling for each breath) yet nobody could say how he developed it; these women know what will more than likely end their lives. They're working in such appalling conditions. I imagine they must also suffer with carpal tunnel or arthritic hands from pounding the rocks.
