It's an ecconomic attack against Russia, and it has started in 2014! The problem is- Russia has already diversified and re-routed its trade to other nations.

As a union it was a very great place to live in, free healthcare, place to live, education and so on, however from USAs standpoint USSR was a competition as it tried to spread it's ideology on whole world and expand this union.
