Basically, what Michael is saying is that the United States is not a democracy but a plutocracy, oligarchy, corporatocracy, whatever you want to call it. Capital rules the country.Americans should wake up to this fact.

The word you're looking for is just "capitalist". and they know, they just don't want to think too hard about who has to pay for capitalism to function and successfully enrich the upper classes.

Some years ago I'd have agreed that the term 'capitalist' is sufficient. I'd have insisted that a capitalist sector and an open market aren't compatible with proletarian rule. Now, after watching China, I think we have to qualify it by specifying that it's capitalist dictatorship that holds society down. A society can have only one dictator, and that has to be the proletarian party.

Inflation, bank collapses, severe drought in the agricultural belt, recession, food shortages, diesel fuel and heating oil shortages, baby formula shortages, and automobile shortages and prices—all these issues are converging and could lead to a real disaster by the end of this year (or sooner).

The Fed doesn't care of inflation. The inflation is a consequence of their attitude (helicopter printing). It is transitory like the dollar no more based on the gold in 1971 . In fact inflation is present since a long time it is just going up faster the last years like the debt. Just fed up of those lies.

Not correct. Fed care very much of inflation as Hudson tell us. The inflation in housing, stock markets, bonds, crypto has been very high since 1980 to the advantage of the one percent, who live of capital income. Thet are also rewarded with low taxes and also can move their fortunes to safe havens.

Federal and local governments need to get into the home building business.Construction should stop not when profits are low, but when housing is sufficient and affordable for all Americans and not just the average American.

But when maximazing profit is the purpose of economic activity, that is difficult. It's better to have affordable housing for everybody as purpose, as it mostly was before capitalism.

As I see it, inflation is a monetary phenomenon caused by the Fed (and other central banks in other countries) increasing the money supply more than the real economy producing goods & services can deal with. So the Fed shgould be able to control inflation provided it actually wants to. But unfortunately the Fed's primary tasks is to support the stock market.

The support of the stock market here in Norway has had the effect that Oslo Stock Exchange (OB) has risen 70 times since 1981 and wages seven. Housing 20. I believe is must be even worse in USA.

I have written extensively on this topic. At one time, the FED could control inflation and Paul Volcker proved this in 1980. That day is over, however. We have entered a self-feeding inflation doom loop thanks to the astronomical (and rapidly rising) National Debt.

Debt service will now be so high, that it requires an ever-increasing amount of tax receipts to pay it. Lowering rates will just increase inflation under this circumstance and makes things ever worse after a short period of making things temporarily better.

The answer is definitely no. Fed doesn't even know how many USD they have printed so far and where they all went. Just ask Ben Bernanke, the former head of FED.

I would love an explanation for why the fed has lost (or never really had) control of inflation. Maybe Michael can give a historical/industrial perspective, and Radhika can give a transistionary/current perspective of it. Both you have had a very positive impact on my life and how I handle my money. Mostly my perspective on debt and modern financial policy, both private and public.

One important point is US leaving the gold standard, which meant that the quantity of money the central banks could issue, was limited by the quantity of gold the central banks had stored. USA had the obligation to swap 35 USD for one Troy ounce of gold. USA paid for the troops in Germany with USD and Germany went to USA and paid 35 USD and got one ounce gold.

They had a surplus in its foreign trade and much with USA. The same with France, because of the Vietnam war. The French banks in Indo-China as the region then was called, sent the dollar surplus back to France and de Gaulle bought gold. That explains why, relative to population, German and France have more gold stored than other countries.

In 1947 USA had 75% of the central bank gold in the world, and because of the above story the quantity decreased and in 1971 Nixon was forced to free USA from the above mentioned obligation. The world got floating currencies and more and more speculations in the movement of currencies. Now only three percent of currency transactions are linked to the trade between countries. The rest is currency speculations performed mostly by robots.

It's hard to control fiat currency inflation if you have to keep printing money to cover the government debts and the market demands for the USD and Treasury Bonds are diminishing. One drastic measure is imposing austerity measures, such as defense spending and social security, and increasing taxes. However, cutting the defense spending will create unemployment for returning soldiers, which increases the social security burden.

There is plenty of work that can and should be done. Productive work. As long as money is created for productive purposes there will not be inflation. Another fix would be to lend money for housing only from money that has already been created.

That’s how most people think money is lent from the bank because they don’t understand that new money is created each time you “loan” money from a bank. The truth is that new money is being credited to your account when you purchase assets. That is the driver of inflation of asset prices.

I work with my dad running a small company and I can tell you metal costs have tripled for hard surfacing rod since the last time I had to buy years ago before the Rona. If costs have tripled and quadrupled for me is it profit seeking solely for me to raise my prices? If I don’t charge the cost of my inputs I’m going to have to go bankrupt. It’s as simple as that.

Employment generally not created via high interest rates alone. In the 70s public debt was low so it may have worked as described. Now public debt is high so increased interest income from the treasury acts as a regressive stimulus.

People seem to take it on face value that inflation is, by definition, a bad thing.I don't think that is the case.I would go as far as to say that a reasonable amount of inflation (5-10%) is, generally, a good thing.

The only out of this hell caused by capitalism is joining an anti-imperialist, socialist organization and fight for socialism. There is simply no way to reform capitalism to "make it better" for the working and oppressed masses.
